Presentation: Chicago’s Fight against Automated License Plate Readers
Over the last two decades, government agencies has quietly spent billions building an ever-expanding surveillance network of automated license plate readers (ALPRs). As ALPRs proliferate, we have seen them evolve into a tool used to locate abortion seekers, deport migrants, and to threaten community members practicing their rights to expression.
Lucy Parsons Labs (LPL) has monitored the growth of this technology for over a decade with our researchers spending years filing public records requests across the country. LPL—and colleagues at sister organizations—have helped expose some of the largest stories about ALPR abuses across the country. Our team will detail key insights learned from our investigations and trace the growing public backlash against ALPRs.
However, while vendors are now facing increased scrutiny and push back, efforts to reign in the technology are being hamstrung by the same actors who exploit our data. LPL will describe the struggles of today, where we see the technology going in the future, and how we must adapt to a changing regulatory and political landscape.
This event will be in person, but you can also tune in via livestream. Doors open at 6pm. The livestream and announcements will start around 6:30pm CDT.
