Presentation: “How Are You, Chicago?”: Mapping Chicago’s Wellbeing with Ward Wise

Description: Among friends, we tend to ask “How are you?” to assess each other’s wellbeing. The researchers and developers at Ward Wise take a much broader approach, compiling 200+ different community-sourced metrics assessing quality of life across the wards and neighborhoods of Chicago.

This presentation starts with an overview of the different frameworks used to evaluate human flourishing, then reviews how Ward Wise has grown from focusing exclusively on participatory budgeting to enabling a comprehensive range of metrics. The Ward Wise data team will review specific metric methodologies nominated by community members, using them to demonstrate the basic metric groups: points, polygons and projections. Then, the Ward Wise UX team will review how they’ve navigated analytical complexity to keep the dashboard simple, useful and personalized.
